Youtube for Android updated; not downloadable via Market on Phone.

The good news is that the Youtube app for Android new features include a +1 button, "watch later" queue and the ability to edit video info while uploading. Now that said, I did get the notification about the update on My "old" Nexus One running Android 2.3.6. But, Android Market listed the item as not available in my country. Youtube, unless I'm wrong, is an open source app that is pre-installed on all Android devices. So why would an update be unavailable in my region? I decided to check on the web version of Android Market on my PC. Sure enough the latest version of the app was listed there as available for download; clicking install and the app was pushed to my device.

Come on Google, get your act together.

The update can be downloaded here.

Evernote now supports sketching and annotation.

An update to the popular note taking app was pushed out to Android phones today. And it supports some cool features like the ability to draw and annotate. But the latter features will work only if you have Skitch installed ion your phone. Skitch was recently acquired by Evernote. Simply put, both apps kind of have a link built-in to each other; Not what I would call the best example of integration. Hopefully Evernote will work this out so we don't need to have two apps installed on our phones and bring a better experience to users.

Skitch is an app that lets you draw sketches and annotate images and send them into Evernote. As shown in the picture, both apps have an icon that links to each other. Evernote now has new icon in the form of a square and heart logo that takes you to Skitch. Once in Skitch you can draw or write your note using your own handwriting. When done, tap the now famous elephant icon to save your note into Evernote.

Among other features is the ability to make searches offline; support for slideshow view; shared notebook improvements that let you view the shared notebook right on your phone; ability to save files to the SD card etc.

Check Android market on your phone to download the free update. Also note that you will need to download Skitch to be able to benefit from the additional functionalities. Skitch is also available free on Market.

Google to acquire Motorola Mobility for $12.5 billion; Increases patent portfolio.

I'm posting verbatim Larry Page's post on the Google Blog.

Since its launch in November 2007, Android has not only dramatically increased consumer choice but also improved the entire mobile experience for users. Today, more than 150 million Android devices have been activated worldwide—with over 550,000 devices now lit up every day—through a network of about 39 manufacturers and 231 carriers in 123 countries. Given Android’s phenomenal success, we are always looking for new ways to supercharge the Android ecosystem. That is why I am so excited today to announce that we have agreed toacquire Motorola.

Motorola has a history of over 80 years of innovation in communications technology and products, and in the development of intellectual property, which have helped drive the remarkable revolution in mobile computing we are all enjoying today. Its many industry milestones include the introduction of the world’s first portable cell phone nearly 30 years ago, and the StarTAC—the smallest and lightest phone on earth at time of launch. In 2007, Motorola was a founding member of the Open Handset Alliance that worked to make Android the first truly open and comprehensive platform for mobile devices. I have loved my Motorola phones from the StarTAC era up to the current DROIDs.

In 2008, Motorola bet big on Android as the sole operating system across all of its smartphone devices. It was a smart bet and we’re thrilled at the success they’ve achieved so far. We believe that their mobile business is on an upward trajectory and poised for explosive growth.

Motorola is also a market leader in the home devices and video solutions business. With the transition to Internet Protocol, we are excited to work together with Motorola and the industry to support our partners and cooperate with them to accelerate innovation in this space.

Motorola’s total commitment to Android in mobile devices is one of many reasons that there is a natural fit between our two companies. Together, we will create amazing user experiences that supercharge the entire Android ecosystem for the benefit of consumers, partners and developers everywhere.

This acquisition will not change our commitment to run Android as an open platform. Motorola will remain a licensee of Android and Android will remain open. We will run Motorola as a separate business. Many hardware partners have contributed to Android’s success and we look forward to continuing to work with all of them to deliver outstanding user experiences.

We recently explained how companies including Microsoft and Apple are banding together in anti-competitive patent attacks on Android. The U.S. Department of Justice had to intervene in the results of one recent patent auction to “protect competition and innovation in the open source software community” and it is currently looking into the results of the Nortel auction. Our acquisition of Motorola will increase competition by strengthening Google’s patent portfolio, which will enable us to better protect Android from anti-competitive threats from Microsoft, Apple and other companies.

The combination of Google and Motorola will not only supercharge Android, but will also enhance competition and offer consumers accelerating innovation, greater choice, and wonderful user experiences. I am confident that these great experiences will create huge value for shareholders.

I look forward to welcoming Motorolans to our family of Googlers.

Today's app updates on my Nexus One: Angry Birds and FriendCaller.

Two updates have been pushed to my Nexus One this morning. There is an update for Angry Birds that brings a new episode  called Mine and Dine. In this episode the pigs have gone underground to hide the eggs they stole. Use the landscape to your advantage to chase them out and recover the eggs. Collect some gems while you're at it. Note that Angry Birds is rated "Low Maturity" on Android Market (That made me laugh).

Download link: https://market.android.com/details?id=com.rovio.angrybirds

The second free update applies to FriendCaller, a free VoIP app that lets you make free phone calls using your phone data connection. Calls to landline and mobile phones are not free though, but are cheap. FriendCaller has been working good for me.

What's new in this update:

  • Echo cancellation and other audio filters to enhance the voice quality for Android 2.3+ and especially tablets.
  • Several layout improvements.
  • Bug fixes.
FriendCaller is also rated "Low Maturity".

SPB announces SPB Time with Bio and Paranoid alarms.

SPB Time is another software from SPB that jades it's debut on Windows Mobile and is now ported to Android. The application is probably the only skin able clock for Android. Users who purchase SPB Time will have free access to a skin gallery.

Of course SPB Time also includes the alarm feature with over 20 tunes built-in. But alarms can be annoying. SPB did a great job by adding two types of alarms for different category of users. There are users who prefer a gentle wake up; birds chirping for example. Then, there are those who need a rude wake up. Those will choose the paranoid. "Those who prefer the gentle and natural way of waking up can choose the friendly Bio alarm to start the day with slight ticks, lights and calm sound of birds or water before the actual alarm time. It helps to wake up without any stress on the correct stage of sleep. There's also another type of sleepers. They need a cold water tub to be poured on the face or the brass band playing into the ears to wake them up.  Loud Paranoid alarm is for them: it suggests solving the puzzle and won't stop until it's done correctly. Those who still lack some extra minutes to sleep can snooze the alarm by shaking the phone".
