New Telegram's chat folder and archiving will help you unclutter your feed.

In an update published today, Telegram introduces chat folders, a feature users with a lot of activity in their feed will certainly appreciate as it will help unclutter their feed and quickly and easily sort through their messages. Users can create custom folders in the app settings or use the preset folders and these folders can appear as tabs in the app. 

Version 6.0.1 of Telegram also lets you easily transfer your chats to the archived chats folder with a simple swipe from the left. Unless you choose to mute the chat, archived chats that receive a notification will reappear in your feed.

Chat folder and archiving are, in my opinion, the most important elements in this update, but there are more features, most of them related to the folders. See the full changelog below.

Telegram for Android lets you replace media sent by mistake, add URLs to text and more.

Telegram for Android has been updated today to version 4.8.10 with a bunch of useful features and improvements. The popular messaging app is adding the ability for users to replace media that was sent by mistake. Up until now, users were able to correct such mistakes by deleting the message outright. This update improves on that and will let users simply change the photo or video right away. All they need to do is to start editing the message and tap the paperclip button to replace the attached media with the correct one. You can see that in action in the Gif below. It works so well you'll want to make mistakes on purpose :).

Telegram is also letting users share more than just a phone number as vCards. Currently, sharing a contact will send the main phone number only. Thanks to this update, users will get to select the data they want to share and that includes several phone numbers, birth dates, homes address, etc.

The rest of the changelog is also useful. Telegram added a 'create link' feature in the formatting menu so users can add URLs to text. Users will be able to preview chats with a tap and hold on profile pictures. And finally, messages can be canceled before they are sent.

Telegram 4.8.5 introduces sticker suggestions and search.

Version 4.8.5 of Telegram for Android is out and the app now makes it easier to discover new stickers. Of all the messaging app I use, none give so much importance to stickers as Telegram does. Except for this time, they are not the one leading the pack. If my memory serves me well, I first experienced emoji and stickers search in Gboard, Google's excellent keyboard app. For the stickers aficionados, Telegram version 4.8.5 brings Sticker suggestions and search.

The other feature in this update is about 'multi-shot sending'. I haven't had time to give this one a shot, but this is how Telegram describes it: "Need a couple of extra selfies to maximize dramatic effect? Dog can't stop doing adorable tricks? Not a problem. Use the new + button when taking a photo to take and send multiple media one after another." So much for Telegram's latest update for Android.

Telegram 4.8 introduces video streaming, automatic night mode and a login widget.

A week into February and Telegram has published another update in the Store bringing some useful features to the messaging app as it pursues its goal to become the one messaging app for all.

The first item in the list of changes is video streaming. Users will be able to view videos right away upon receiving them without having to download them first. A feature that was introduced in WhatsApp in January last year. It's good to see Telegram introducing it too as it is neat. Video streaming works with Telegram 4.8 and on.

The second feature is Night mode. The latter is already available in the app and I have it enabled by default. In case you are not comfortable with having night mode on at all times, Telegram now lets you schedule the switch to the dark version "after nightfall or in low-light conditions". To setup night mode, go to Settings > Theme > Auto-Night mode. Three options are available: Disabled, Scheduled and Automatic. Telegram also added three "preferred night theme" to choose from: Default, Blue and Dark.

The last item is a Telegram Login Widget to log in to websites that support signing in with Telegram using your browser. "Logging in will send your Telegram name, username, and your profile picture to the website owner. Your phone number remains hidden. The website can also request permission to send you messages from their bot."

Telegram 4.7 for Android now supports multiple accounts and in-line replies.

Telegram is starting the year with an update for Android that bumps the app to version 4.7, which let users add up to three accounts with different phone numbers. Users can quickly switch between them from the side menu. Notifications, however, won’t come separately and that no matter which account is the default.

Here’s the changelog:

·       Quickly switch between different Telegram accounts if you use multiple phone numbers.

·       Swipe left on any message to reply to it.

The second feature in the changelog is a quick reply feature that works with a left swipe on a specific message to start a reply.

Telegram for Android updated to version 4.6 will now show multiple photos from Instagram and Tweets as an album.

Telegram for Android has been updated to version 4.6 with a bunch of new features. The cross-platform messaging app offers fast and secure instant messaging and the developer claims the app “is the fastest messaging app on the market, connecting people via a unique, distributed network of data centers around the globe.”

Telegram is indeed quite popular with Android users with over 100 million active users in its two and a half years of existence. Not as popular as WhatsApp which has a billion download. But WhatsApp is owned by Facebook and benefits from the billions of users of the world largest social network. Nonetheless, Telegram has a lot more features than WhatsApp with the same simplicity in terms of use.

As I’ve said above, version 4.6 introduces some new features. Here’s what’s new:

·       New granular settings for auto-downloading media.

·       Link previews for Instagram posts and tweets with multiple photos will now show all the media as an album.

·       Embeddable HTML-widget for messages in public channels and groups (available when viewing t.me links to messages in web browsers).

·       Added support for albums to Secret Chats.

·       Added full support to MTProto 2.0.

Telegram has a reputation for taking privacy seriously and if I’m not mistaken, was the first messaging app to offer end-to-end encryption. The app uses a combination of 256-bit symmetric AES encryption, 2048-bit RSA encryption, and Diffie-Hellman secure key exchange. If none of these stuffs make sense to you, just know that Telegram offers the best in terms of protection.

Telegram for Android groups photos & videos into albums; adds saved messages & improves search.

Some new features are making their way into Telegram 4.5, the latest iteration of the messaging app for Android. The update allows users to send multiple photos and videos grouped into albums with each album able to support up to 10 photos or videos. Telegram will automatically arrange the photos and videos “in the chat as elegantly proportioned thumbnails.” The recipient will be notified once, instead of ten times. In addition, Telegram also let users choose the order photos are sent. Still on the photo front, Telegram 4.5 adds multiple profile photos. This comes in handy if you can’t choose which photo is best for your profile.

This update will also allow users to “bookmark important messages” by forwarding them to Saved Messages. These messages can be saved to users’ personal cloud storage. “Each saved message has a “go to” button that takes you to the right place in the chat where it was originally posted.” Telegram will display Saved Messages at the top of the in the sharing and forwarding menus.

Search has also been improved thanks to a new search algorithm. Users will be able to search “for public channels and bots by their titles, and most popular items will always be displayed first.”

All in all, Telegram version 4.5 introduces some nice features. Check the update in Google Play Store. It may not be available right away. So, be patient.

WhatsApp announces real-time Live Location sharing coming to Android and iOS.

Recently I blogged about Telegram bringing live location sharing to Android and today WhatsApp on Android and iOS is following suit with the gradual roll out of the same feature. Once the update reaches users’ devices, they will be able to share their location in real time. WhatsApp posted about this: “Whether you’re meeting up with friends, letting loved ones know you’re safe, or sharing your commute, Live Location is a simple and secure way to let people know you are safe.”

And this new feature is fully encrypted, keeping it hidden from prying eyes. Like Telegram’s implementation, WhatsApp users will be able to stop the sharing at any time or “let the Live Location sharing timer simply expire.” The blog post does not give any details about the default time the sharing stops and I haven’t got the update on my phone yet to verify this.

Live Location sharing works for one person and groups. According to the blog post, users can do this by tapping “"Location" in the attach button, there's a new option to "Share Live Location." Choose for how long you want to share and tap send. Each person in the chat will be able to see your real-time location on a map. And if more than one person shares their Live Location in the group, all locations will be visible on the same map.”

As I said above, the update hasn’t reach my device yet and WhatsApp said that the update will be rolling out in the coming weeks. Check it out on Google Play Store.

Telegram 4.4 for Android gets live location sharing and a redesigned media player.

Today, the popular Telegram messaging app for Android has been updated to version 4.4 with a new Live Location feature that will let users share their current location to any chat in real time. Telegram writes in a blog post that this feature is “useful when you are on your way to an appointment or are trying to coordinate with friends at a large event.”

The Live Location feature gets its name from the fact that users can share their location and choose how long other users in a chat can see their them. Three choices are available: 15 minutes, 1 hour or 8 hours. To start location sharing, simply tap the attachment icon and select location. Tap Share My Live Location for… and select the length of time convenient to you. It is also possible to share Live location in groups and “if other members of the group do the same, you’ll get an interactive map of everyone’s current coordinates.” A bar at the top will remind you that location is still active and users can stop sharing with two taps.

Redesigned media player

Telegram also redesigned the built-in media in this update to “better support the playback of MP3s and other music files you send and receive.” The blog post even offers a channel where users can experience the new media player. The channel is @cctracks. There, users will be able to download some audio files to listen to. 

Language and community-driven translation.

With the addition of French, Indonesian, Malay, Russian and Ukrainian, Telegram now supports 13 languages that can be changed in-app. In order to improve the translation, Telegram is inviting users to use their localization platform and help with proper translation. Should users find a “specific element” that is not properly translated, they can suggest “alternative word or phrase.”

Telegram 4.3 adds the '@' badge for users to never miss messages in the chat list and more.

Earlier this year, Telegram allowed its users to create groups with up to 10,000 members from 200 initially. Tracking messages in a large group can be quite tedious and irritating. Telegram is adding a new feature today that will let users easily keep track of mentions and replies thanks to a ‘@’ badge in their chat list. The badge will disappear after they’ve read the messages.

This update contains a bunch of other features. Telegram allows users to create and upload stickers into the app and this update will let users who uploaded 5 or more stickers will be able to add individual stickers to their favorites, making them easily accessible at the top of the sticker panel in the ‘star section’.

Telegram is also introducing stickers for groups. “…large groups with 100 members and more can now choose an official sticker set for all the members of the group to see and use while they’re chatting in the group without the need of adding it to their panels.”

The ‘Invite Friends’ feature has been revamped. Basically, invitees with contacts in Telegram will appear at the top of your list.

And there’s more:
• Twitch videos are now supported in the Telegram in-app player, so you can watch Twitch streams in Picture-in-Picture mode while chatting with your friends.
• When on a Telegram voice call, you can now check the signal strength thanks to the new indicator.
• On iOS, you can edit any photo you pasted directly to a chat from clipboard before sending.
• On Android, when forwarding a message, you can long tap to select multiple recipients.
• On Android, when viewing photos in Shared Media, you can go to the place in chat where the photo was posted.
• On Android, if you have many new messages in many active chats, synchronization will happen much, much faster.

How to add emojis to Telegram messages on Android with keywords?

Version 4.2.2 of Telegram on Android lets you search or add emojis by typing the ':' keyword followed by the type of emoji you want. For example, if you're feeling relieved, type ':relieved; feeling satisfied, type ':satisfied'. I don't know about you, but I find this tedious. I'd rather browse for the emoji, which, to me, is way faster and easier

This update also lets you find messages from a particular user in any group. According to the changelog, to achieve this, tap '...' in the top right corner when in a group. Tap 'Search' and the new 'Search by member'. Then select a user to browse through all of their messages.

Telegram on Android now supports 10000 members super groups and bot payments.

Telegram, the messaging app for Android, has been updated today. Before this update, the app supported the creation of groups of up to 5000 members, which is a lot. In this update, users will be able to add up to 10000 members in super groups. Isn’t that insane? Not sure you have that amount of friends or maybe you use Telegram for professional reasons, but managing and moderating such a big group is no easy task. That’s why Telegram added granular rights for the super group admins and they will able to temporarily ban misbehaving members among other things.

The update also adds an event log that records all “service actions taken by members and admins in the last 48 hours – with search and filters.” Admins will also be able to search for specific users among groups. 

Telegram added Android Pay support for bot payments if you use this service. Finally, the app will now show photos and videos together when sharing them.

[Updated]Telegram introduces secure voice calls.

Update: Telegram is making the voice call feature available in Africa, North and South America. Initially the feature was available in Europe only.

Today Telegram for Android has been updated with calls. For now, users of the popular messaging app in  Western Europe will be able to make "secure, crystal-clear" call within the app. Calls will be encrypted end-to-end and will require verification by both parties before being initiated. The caller and the callee need to compare four emojis for the conversation to begin. And that is not all.

Telegram voice call is AI powered. The neural network will learn from device's feedback to optimize the call. No user's data will be recorded, only information such as network speed, ping times. These data will help improve future calls. Telegram even goes to the extent of giving users compete control on "who can and who can't call you with granular precision". The app will even let you enable the Use less Data option in Data and Storage settings.

Telegram for Android updated with theme editor.

Telegram, the encrypted messaging platform for Android, has been updated today with support for themes. This update adds new default Dark and Blue themes which are accessible in Settings > Themes. If that is not enough, Telegram will also let users create their own themes using the new built-in editor. To do so, tap "Create New Theme" and give it a name. A color palette will appear after clicking OK; Pick one of the proposed themes to reveal the editor and customize it to your liking before sharing with the rest of the Telegram community. Users can also follow the @themes channel on Telegram for more ideas.
